International Students participated in a Summer Course on Energy Efficiency in Görlitz (GER)

BUP GroupFostering energy efficiency is a key parameter, if ambitious international climate protection goals are to be achieved. A variety of topics, from national and international energy policies, energy-saving solutions for buildings and industrial processes, planning and governance as well as change management were considered during this summer course (Downloads). For example, Best Practice from GPEE Project was presented by Dr. Dariusz Heim (Lodz University of Technology, Poland). Academics from Germany, Austria, Belarus and the UK shared latest findings from research and real-life pilot projects. Students from 10 European and Asian countries (Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Finland, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia und México) not only deepened their competencies from theoretical knowledge but with hand-on workshops on change management and sustainable energy programs in the different countries, which were presented during a "Science Slam" in an entertaining way. The summer course was completed with an excursion to one of the world's largest overburden conveyor bridge formerly used in brown coal open-pit mining and to the lignite driven power plant in Boxberg, which is one of the most-efficient power plants, though based on fossil resources.

The summer course is an annual event organised by Baltic University Programme with support of the Research and Transfer Centre "Applications of Life-Sciences" of University of Applied Sciences Hamburg (HAW FTZ-ALS) and the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz. Academic stewardship is granted by Prof. Dr. (mult.) Dr. h.c. (mult.) Walter Leal (HAW Hamburg, Manchester Metropolitan University), Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Bernd Delakowitz (Hochschule Zittau Görlitz) und Dr. Paula Lindroos (Baltic University Programme, Centre for Sustainable Development, Uppsala University). The recent course was organised in cooperation with the international research projects „Planning for Energy Efficient Cities" (PLEEC) and „German-Polish Energy Efficiency Project" (GPEE).
